The Cafeteria Feels Too Loud book cover

A picture book about a busy school lunch

The Cafeteria Feels Too Loud

Sam usually likes lunchtime, but today his morning already feels full. Clattering trays, scraping chairs and overlapping voices make it difficult to follow his friend's story while eating.

When a tray falls, Sam recognises that the feeling comes from everything adding up, not only that one sound. He asks Ms. Rivera for a break. After noticing Milo eating with headphones, Sam asks for a quieter place to sit and headphones too.

The cafeteria stays busy, but Sam takes one bite and one drink before checking how he feels. He and Milo also notice that their experiences are not exactly the same.

For parents and caregivers

Read together to talk about busy lunchrooms, the things Sam notices and how he asks an adult for help. The story gives you a particular moment to discuss without requiring a child to describe their own day.

For teachers

Discuss Ms. Rivera's response and Sam's choices. The book includes lunch-support pages, a four-part lunch plan and discussion questions. Any real lunchroom arrangements should be agreed with the school and the child.

  • What was adding up for Sam before the tray fell?
  • What did Sam ask Ms. Rivera for, and what happened next?

After the school day

After School, I Need Quiet follows Sam home, where he and his mom make space for quiet before choosing what comes next.
